Escaping the Matrix—and Learning What Freedom Actually Is

I’m an obesity parolee.

After decades trapped in a 96-kg body—failed diets, false hope, quiet despair—I got out.
Down more than 36 kgs.

But anyone who’s ever been released after a long sentence knows this truth:

Freedom is disorienting.

Obesity wasn’t just my condition.
It was my identity.

Now I look in the mirror and see a stranger.
And somewhere inside, the 96-kg version of me is still standing there—watching, afraid.


When the Cage Is Gone—but the Scars Remain

On the surface, there’s pride. Gratitude. Relief.

Underneath?
Mental scars that don’t disappear with fat loss.

A childhood neighbor recently met me and shattered my worldview:

“If I’d met you today for the first time, your weight wouldn’t even crack my top ten descriptors.”

That stopped me cold.

For decades, my weight filtered every interaction, every assumption, every self-story.

The New Prison: Chasing Validation

Here’s the uncomfortable truth:

My brain didn’t stop obsessing.
It just changed targets.

Weight loss fixation morphed into:

  • Fear of regain

  • Terror of the “last 20 pounds”

  • Imposter syndrome as the former-fat health coach

The shackles didn’t disappear.
They became shinier:

Scales.
Apps.
CGMs.
Food trackers.
Other people’s approval.

A doctor’s praise.
Tighter jeans.
A social media like.

Tiny dopamine hits. Brief relief.
Then back to fear.

That’s not freedom.
That’s a new cell.


The Irony I See as a Coach

Every day, I coach clients who are doing everything right
yet the scale won’t move.

I tell them:

  • Look at blood markers

  • Look at energy

  • Look at strength

  • Look at how your life is expanding

And it’s true.

But here’s the mirror moment:

I had learned to tame physical hunger
before learning how to feed my soul.

External tools saved my life.
Clinging to them too tightly was keeping me small.


The Real Fear Underneath It All

Let’s name it honestly:

What if this body is just a stay of execution?

After decades of “bail denied” by every diet,
why should I trust this freedom?

That fear is rational.
And it’s common.


Layered Defenses Still Matter—but Not as Chains

Eight years ago, on T1DM diagnosis of my daughter when she was struggling for life under ketoacidosis, I made a deal with myself:

If I get another shot—
We choose health over regret.

We lived up to it:
Low-carb.
Movement.
Joy.
Presence.

No one on their deathbed wishes they tracked macros longer.

Eulogies don’t mention carb counts.

Weight loss isn’t the destination.
It’s the ticket to life.

That’s why I preach low-carb so hard:
It gives people their lives back.

But here’s the evolution:

Low-carb isn’t a diet anymore.
It’s a continuum.

There is no “after.”
No off-ramp to shame.

We slip.
We recover.
We adjust.
We move on.

Consistency beats perfection.
Always.


The Real Heroic Act

All those years of “failure”?
Not wasted.

They were training.
They were data.
They built resilience.

Progress feels slow?
Confidence shaky?
Show up anyway.

That’s heroic.
